How to choose a B2B lead generation agency

Questions to ask before choosing a B2B lead generation agency: targeting, qualified meetings, relevant evidence, campaign ownership and sales handover.

Ask how they would research your market

Give an agency the offer, your existing customer profile and a difficult example of a company you do not want to target. Ask how it would decide what belongs in the campaign. A useful answer describes inclusion criteria, exclusions and decision roles, rather than naming a database and promising a large list.

Ask for a small sample of the reasoning, with private contact details omitted. You want to see whether the team can explain why a company fits and what makes the approach relevant. This is especially useful for niche products and buying committees where job titles alone are unreliable.

Define a qualified meeting together

Agree what must be true before a meeting is counted: company fit, the person's role, the context of their interest and the purpose of the conversation. Decide how referrals, reschedules, no-shows and requests outside scope are handled. A calendar entry is easier to count than a commercial opportunity, but the two are not interchangeable.

Avoid making the definition so strict that it requires the agency to guarantee a buying decision before your team has run discovery. The boundary should be practical: the agency establishes relevant interest and context; your team confirms needs, budget, fit and the path to a sale.

Read the evidence carefully

Ask whether a case describes research delivered, replies, meetings, opportunities or signed revenue. Each can be meaningful, but they answer different questions. Check the period, the service actually delivered and the client's role in the result.

A result from a consumer campaign does not establish expertise in a technical B2B market. A relevant case may be modest but explain the buying problem and the work clearly. Prefer that detail to a dramatic number without a denominator or a commercial definition.

Inspect the working relationship before signing

Find out who writes messages, who approves them, who handles replies and how quickly your team must respond. Ask what you will see in the CRM and whether you retain the research, message history and assets. Clarify how opt-outs are handled and how campaign problems are escalated.

Finally, compare the complete scope and costs, then agree the first review decision. It should be possible to stop, refine or expand based on what the market shows. A provider that can explain the limits of the first test is easier to manage than one that treats every uncertainty as a guaranteed result.
